NCBIO ERA CHAIR

Associate Professor

We are recruiting an Associate Professor to work in the field of cell biology of synaptic transmission. Candidates should meet the criteria of “Established Researchers (R4)” established in the European Framework for Research Careers.

Admission requirements include:

  • Ph.D. degree in neuroscience (or related area) with at least 5-10 years of relevant post-doctoral experience;
  • Emerging international reputation, based on research excellence in the field of neural cell biology, as demonstrated by significant research publications, invited presentations etc.;
  • Experience in managing students and technicians;
  • Demonstrated ability to secure and manage grant funding;
  • Capacity to identify research problems and opportunities within the broad area of inhibitory synaptic transmission and to develop a world-class research program;
  • Excellent ability to communicate and network within the research community and wider society;
  • Commitment to professional development of his/her own career and capacity to be a mentor and role model for the professional development of others;
  • Ability to create an inclusive, innovative and creative research environment;

NCBIO ERA CHAIR

Assistant Professor

We are recruiting an Assistant Professor working in the field of cell biology of synaptic transmission. Candidates should meet the criteria of “Established Researchers (R3)” established in the European Framework for Research Careers.

Admission requirements include:

  • Must hold a Ph.D. degree and have at least 3-5 years of post-doctoral experience working in the field of synaptic transmission. Experience and interest in astrocyte biology are essential;
  • Must have an established track record as demonstrated with high impact publications and conference presentations;
  • Skilled in advanced molecular biology and protein biochemistry techniques (gene design and cloning, Western blot, immunohistochemistry, RNA isolation, RT-qPCR, transcriptomics, CRISPR- Cas9 systems, BioID, Split TurboID, immunoprecipitation, data analysis tools);
  • Skilled in mouse work (in utero electroporation, mouse brain sectioning (vibratome and cryostat), stereotaxic injections, perfusion, preparation of acute brain slices and immunohistochemistry);
  • Experience in tissue culture techniques: establishment and maintenance of cell lines, preparation of primary cortical neuronal and astrocyte cultures from mice, genetic manipulation (transfection/transduction);
  • Knowledge of fluorescence microscopy (including live-imaging and confocal methodologies);
  • Good communication and presentation skills, with proven ability to write and prepare research papers and grants;
  • A team player with the ability to organize and lead/direct a research team, including students and technicians;
  • Fluent in written and spoken English.

NCBIO ERA CHAIR

Post-Doc Researcher

We are recruiting a Post-Doc Researcher working in the field of cell biology of synaptic transmission. Candidates should meet the criteria of “Established Researchers (R2)” established in the European Framework for Research Careers.

Admission requirements include:

  • Highly motivated with a recent Ph.D. degree in neuroscience and a solid track record of achievements (1st author publications, conference talks, posters etc);
  • Experience in the field of synaptic transmission is essential. Experience in glia biology is an advantage;
  • Skills in patch-clamp electrophysiology and calcium imaging in acute brain slices;
  • Experience with the design and use of AAV-based viral vectors (incl. stereotaxic surgeries) for cell-type specific genetic manipulation;
  • Skilled in immunohistochemistry: from initial animal perfusion to image acquisition. Experience with advanced confocal systems and super-resolution imaging is an advantage;
  • Strong background in data analysis, incl. use of programming tools (MATLAB, Python) for custom scripting;
  • Ability to work independently, but also capable of collaborative work;
  • Fluent in written and spoken English.

NCBIO ERA CHAIR

Project Manager

We are recruiting a Project Manager to support the activities of NCBio ERA Chair. The successful applicant will be central to the organization and management of the ERANET group, in close collaboration with the group leader, Dr. Matthew Holt. Tasks will involve the management of ongoing projects (including relevant reporting), the identification of relevant funding schemes, grant preparation and submission. The successful candidate will also be responsible for establishing and maintaining relationships with relevant (international) partners, including clinicians, industry and patient groups.

The position is ideal for a post-doctoral scientist interested in moving into science policy and management.

Admission requirements include:

  • Ph.D. degree obtained in the previous 5-10 years, with relevant post-doctoral experience. A background in neuroscience is highly desirable;
  • Strong track record of securing and managing grant funding;
  • Excellent communication skills, fluent in both spoken and written English;

NCBIO ERA CHAIR

Senior Technician

We are recruiting a Senior Technician to develop the implementation of advanced molecular biology and protein biochemistry techniques;  maintenance of cell lines and preparation of primary neuronal and glial cultures; genetic manipulation of mice and follow up histology; organization and management of day-to-day lab activities.

Admission requirements include:

  • Familiarity with required techniques;
  • Have worked with mice (or rats) and have experience with colony management;
  • Familiarity with the day-to-day functioning of a research lab in an academic environment;
  • Highly motivated and comfortable with responsibility; wants to grow into a role of increasing responsibility in respect to lab organization and management;
  • Can work independently but also as a team player. Happy to share experience/expertise with new researchers (Ph.D. students, other technical staff etc);
  • Must be fluent in both written and spoken Portuguese and English.

Research Technician/Lab manager

We are recruiting a Research Technician/Lab manager to develop the routine molecular biology (cloning of simple constructs); establishment of basic tissue culture protocols for cell lines and primary neuronal and glia cultures; basic protein biochemistry (Western blotting, immunohistochemistry); fluorescence microscopy (including confocal); organization and management of day-to-day lab activities.

PhD student

We are recruiting a PhD Student to support the activities of NCBio ERA Chair. The successful applicant must have obtained a recent MSc in neuroscience. But applicants with a MSc in molecular biology, biochemistry or cell biology with a knowledge of synapse biology will also be considered.

Admission requirements include:

  • Must be within the top 10% of year group and committed to a career in top-class science: you are highly motivated and goal-directed;
  • Hands-on lab experience (M.Sc. thesis, summer internships etc) is an advantage;
  • Capable of working independently and as part of a team;
  • Fluent in written and spoken English.
